Coolcation Sweden – Could Climate Become Sweden's Tourism Advantage?
As travellers increasingly seek cooler destinations, Sweden may be uniquely positioned to benefit from the rise of the Coolcation trend. But the opportunity is about much more than temperature.

For decades, summer travel has largely been associated with sunshine, beaches and high temperatures, with many travellers heading south in search of warmer weather and long days by the sea.
However, as heatwaves become increasingly common across parts of Southern Europe, a new travel trend is gaining momentum. More travellers are actively seeking cooler destinations where they can spend time outdoors comfortably, sleep well, enjoy nature and experience a slower pace of life. This growing trend has become known as the Coolcation.
While much of the conversation has focused on destinations such as Norway, Scotland and Iceland, it raises an interesting question for Sweden.
Could our climate, which has historically been seen as a disadvantage compared to Mediterranean destinations, become one of our greatest tourism assets?
Sweden offers something that many modern travellers appear to be looking for. Long summer evenings, thousands of lakes, vast forests, open landscapes and easy access to nature create a type of experience that feels increasingly relevant in a world where many people are seeking balance, wellbeing and recovery from busy everyday lives.
What makes this trend particularly interesting is that it extends beyond weather. The appeal of a coolcation is not simply cooler temperatures. It is the combination of space, tranquillity, outdoor living and a feeling of being able to slow down and reconnect with nature.
In many ways, the trend connects with several broader developments currently shaping the hospitality industry. Concepts such as wellness tourism, destination-led living and even the rise of Hushpitality all point towards a growing desire for experiences that support wellbeing rather than simply offering entertainment or luxury.
For hospitality operators, destination developers and tourism organisations, this presents an opportunity. Sweden already possesses many of the qualities that travellers increasingly value. The challenge may not be creating new attractions, but rather becoming better at communicating and packaging the experiences that already exist.
Perhaps Sweden's future tourism advantage is not that we are cooler.
Perhaps it is that we offer something many travellers are beginning to value even more: space, nature, wellbeing and a summer that allows people to truly relax.
As the Coolcation trend continues to evolve, it will be fascinating to see whether Sweden can position itself not only as a beautiful destination, but as one of Europe's most desirable summer escapes.
