Secondary destinations don’t fail on demand

Most secondary destinations do not suffer from lack of demand — they suffer from lack of positioning.

There is a persistent narrative around secondary destinations: that they are structurally disadvantaged, that demand is thin, that scale is the problem. The data rarely supports it.

What we more often observe is a positioning problem dressed up as a demand problem. The destination has a story, but the story is not articulated, not coordinated, and not commercially translated into the product on the ground. Visitors arrive with no clear sense of what the place is for, and operators compete on price because they have nothing sharper to compete on.

Strong secondary destinations behave differently. They make a decision about who they are, and they hold it. The hotels, the restaurants, the cultural offer and the public realm move in roughly the same direction. The result is a destination that feels considered, and a guest base that self-selects.

This is not a marketing exercise. It is a commercial exercise that happens to have a marketing surface. The positioning work, done seriously, changes what gets built, what gets priced, and what gets retained.

Demand follows clarity. It almost always has.
